The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines is now offering alternative energy generation incentives to businesses and not-for-profits in Northern Ontario. The program provides grant funding for business expenditures related to renewable energy projects. The goal of this program is to reduce the costs of energy consumption for small businesses in Northern Ontario, thus improving their positioning in Canadian markets.
Canadian Government Grants for Green Energy Improvements
The Northern Energy Program can provide small business funding grants to those who are planning to partake in one of the following activities:
- Internal Energy Generation: Businesses that looking to establish renewable energy generation systems for their own use can receive up to $100K or 50% of the eligible project costs. Typical activities that would eligible for funding through this program include those related to the installation and purchase of the required capital equipment.
- Renewable Energy Planning: Organizations involved in the energy sector may receive up to $100K or 50% of the project costs related to the design and development of a renewable energy program. This would only apply to businesses that have an established partnership with a municipality and possess the capital and capacity to carry out the project.

More Canadian Business Grants for Improving Energy Efficiency
Businesses that are not considered within the Northern Ontario region are encouraged to browse some of the alternative business funding grants for improving their energy efficiencies:
- saveONenergy Program – Retrofits: Organizations within the GTA can receive funding for small business improvements regarding the retrofitting of inefficient lighting and equipment. The program can provide up to 50% of the project costs along with increased annual electricity savings.
- saveONenergy Program – Energy Audits: Businesses can receive government funding incentives towards the costs related to the evaluation of their facility performance. Organizations can receive up to 50% of the costs towards a comprehensive evaluation your businesses’ energy efficiency to determine a strategy to improve energy efficiency.
