Employee Spotlight: Theron Williamson

Our government funding experts are a dedicated team of professionals who go above and beyond to support our clients. In this blog, get up close and personal with our Manager of Client Services, Theron Williamson, as he shares insights into his career path, his passion for grants, and the dynamic nature of his role.

From Automotive to Grants: Theron’s Career Path

Theron began his professional journey in the automotive industry, working with dealerships on the retail side. However, after his daughter was born, he sought a career that offered a better work-life balance. A chance introduction to the grants industry by one of his clients sparked his interest, and he quickly found himself in a world he hadn’t known existed. “It was the perfect opportunity to grow,” he reflects. With a background in business studies from the University of Guelph-Humber, where he originally attended on a basketball scholarship, Theron’s transition into the grants sector felt like a natural evolution.

Embracing New Horizons with Ryan

Theron joined our team shortly after its acquisition by Ryan, which was a pivotal factor in his decision to come on board. Reflecting on it, he says, “The acquisition by Ryan added a new dimension to our team. We’re now backed by a global leader, which not only brings stability but also opens up incredible growth opportunities for all of us.” This shift has given Theron a sense of confidence and excitement about the future, both for himself and for his clients. He appreciates the expanded resources and support that Ryan brings, allowing him to offer even greater value to clients and be part of a larger mission.

Ryan’s acquisition has enhanced the depth of services, training, and resources available to Theron and his team, supporting their ability to provide businesses with comprehensive funding strategies. “It’s a great feeling knowing that our work is part of a broader mission with the resources to make a real impact,” he says. This integration of strengths has reinforced his commitment to helping clients, and it’s an exciting step forward for Mentor Works as a whole.

A Passion for Helping Businesses Grow

Although he’s relatively new to the grants industry, Theron finds fulfillment in the variety and impact of his work. “Every day is different,” he shares. “I never know what type of business or technology I’ll be engaging with, and I thrive on those daily surprises.” This diversity, paired with the opportunity to build strong client relationships, is what fuels his passion for helping businesses navigate government funding.

A Day in the Life: Client Services and Collaboration

Theron’s typical day starts with emails and follow-ups, followed by client calls, research, and on-site visits. “I value face-to-face interactions with clients,” he explains. “Seeing their facilities firsthand helps me understand their goals and visions.” This hands-on approach enables Theron to invest fully in each project and cultivate deeper client connections.

Overcoming Challenges in a Dynamic Industry

Navigating the grants landscape isn’t always easy; the constantly shifting timelines and diverse programs can be challenging. However, Theron embraces these challenges with flexibility, drawing from his experience in the automotive sector. He likens the experience to his time on the basketball court, where he must think quickly, make adjustments, and trust his teammates. “It’s like passing the ball to someone else to make the shot. I know I can rely on my team to step in and make things happen,” he says. This dynamic teamwork is crucial to his success, allowing him to pivot and find creative solutions for clients.

A Team That Feels Like Family

Theron values the company culture, where he feels supported and confident in his colleagues’ expertise. “I’ve never felt shut down for asking questions, and I have full confidence in all of our departments,” he notes. This sense of camaraderie keeps him engaged and motivated each day, knowing he can rely on his team to support one another.

Looking to the Future

Theron is excited about the future of the grants industry, especially the push toward sustainability and clean technology. He also hopes to expand the company’s presence in British Columbia, where he has personal connections.

His advice to anyone interested in the grants industry? “Ask questions. You don’t know what you don’t know, and reaching out to experts can open doors you never knew existed.”

Beyond the Office

When he’s not helping clients, Theron loves spending time with his family, traveling, golfing, and playing basketball. He enjoys blending these passions into his work, whether it’s discussing cars with clients or hitting the golf course for a bit of networking. With a strong work-life balance, he’s able to bring his authentic self to work every day.

Theron’s journey is a testament to the power of adaptability, teamwork, and building meaningful relationships. If you’d like to learn more about how our team can support your business, reach out to Theron and discover how government funding can propel your business forward!
