The Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) is designed to support innovative technology projects, as well as infrastructure upgrades for Alberta businesses through funding programs and support services. ERA has two small business grants Alberta funding streams to help Alberta prosper while reducing emissions: the ACT4 stream and the Energy Savings for Businesses stream.

Amount of Funding

Funding amounts vary by program:

ACT4 Call stream

Applications must be placed via a consortium. There are specific funding amounts based on the country/ region the consortium is applying to (applicants must seek funding from at least 2):

  • Canada/ Alberta – Up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $2.85M
  • Germany – no limit identified
  • India – Up to 500,000 in Euros
  • Norway – Maximum NOK 15M per project
  • United States – Up to $540,000 USD per proposal

Energy Savings for Businesses stream

Applicants may receive up to $250,000 per project, with a maximum allotment of up to $1 million per parent company.

Eligible Applicants

Small business grants Alberta applicant eligibility for the ERA program varies by stream:

ACT4 Call stream

Proposals must be submitted by a project consortium comprised of at least 2 eligible applicants seeking funding from at least 2 participating countries and regions. Participating regions include:

  • Canada (Province of Alberta), Germany, India, Norway, and the United States;
  • No project partner can have a share of more than 70% of the project’s work plan activities; and
  • Must meet specific eligibility parameters as identified by the region of application.

Energy Savings for Businesses stream

  • All business and non-profits serviced by an Alberta electric utility are eligible, except for residences;
  • Some new construction projects;
  • Municipally, federal and provincially owned buildings;
  • Publicly funded institutions; and
  • Large Emitters.

Eligible Activities

Activities that are eligible also vary by program:

ACT4 Call stream

Industrial oriented projects that support the deployment of CCUS technologies in the energy and industrial sectors. Must have a TRL of 5 and above. Subjects of special interest include:

  • Carbon capture;
  • Carbon capture and transportation networks;
  • Direct carbon conversion;
  • Permanent storage;
  • Offshore CO2 storage;
  • Clean Hydrogen Production; or
  • Carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

Energy Savings for Businesses stream

Cost-effective high efficiency products and onsite energy generation technologies are eligible for incentives through this program including:

  • Compressed air measures;
  • Process heating;
  • Refrigeration;
  • Food service equipment; and
  • Lighting systems.

ACT4 Call stream

Applications for this program are currently closed. Projects are eligible to start following funding decisions in February/March 2023. Projects must be completed within 3 years.

Energy Savings for Businesses stream

There has been an extension to the Energy Savings for Business program until September 30, 2023. Pre-approval applications must be submitted by June 30, 2023.
