Green Freight Program (GFP): Stream 2
Receive up to $5M for Fleet Retrofits.
The Green Freight Program – Stream 2 provides funding up to a maximum of $5M per Applicant towards fuels switching, engine repowers, and purchase of low-carbon alternative fuel. This stream aims to encourage Canadian companies to make data-driven investment decisions when considering energy-efficient improvements and fuel-switching for their medium and heavy-duty vehicles.

Up to 50% to a maximum of $5M per applicant.

Eligible Applicants
Eligible Applicants include:
- Companies;
- Industry associations;
- Research associations;
- Standards organizations;
- Indigenous and community groups;
- Canadian academic institutions; and
- Provincial, territorial, regional, or municipal governments or their departments.
Vehicle Eligibility Criteria:
- Must have been in service for a minimum of 1 year.
- Be within eligible weight classes (Class 2B, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).
- Ineligible vehicles include vans, SUVs, pickup trucks, public transit buses, school buses, off-road vehicles.

Eligible Activities
- Organizations must have a completed fleet energy assessment that recommends the actions proposed in their application.
- Two types of eligible project activities:
- Repowers: Repowers of eligible technologies must be permanent modifications, demonstrate the capacity to reduce diesel consumption of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDV), and reduce GHG emissions by switching the fuel used to a lower-carbon alternative.
- Purchase of alternative fuel vehicles: To be eligible, a commitment to use a minimum average of 40% renewable or non-fossil fuels is required to be considered for funding. The program will only be providing funding for the incremental cost of the new vehicle that utilizes lower-carbon fuels versus purchasing a standard truck.

Program Deadline
- Program deadline is November 16, 2023.
- Projects can span over the period from April 2024 to March 2027.
