Ontario Skills Development Fund Invests $500K in Brampton

The Ontario government is making a significant investment in Brampton’s workforce, with over $500,000 allocated through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream.

The SDF Training Stream has already supported nearly 600,000 people in training for in-demand jobs, including over 92,000 manufacturing workers, 60,000 construction workers, and 36,000 PSWs and health care workers.

This funding supports two critical projects aimed at providing free training to more than 1,200 internationally-trained jobseekers, aligning their skills with the demands of local employers and enhancing career prospects in the region.

“As Ontario continues to attract record private sector investments that are creating thousands of new jobs, we’re helping jobseekers and workers develop the skills they need to earn better jobs with bigger paycheques. By partnering with local employers and community organizations, these projects are helping over 1,200 Brampton residents leverage their international training to land rewarding careers in Brampton’s most in-demand sectors, from construction to healthcare.” –

Key Projects and Funding

The funding is distributed between two organizations with distinct yet complementary goals:

  1. Sri Guru Nanak Sikh Centre: This project will receive $350,000 to offer job-ready training to internationally-trained newcomers. The initiative aims to connect these individuals with local employers, helping them secure in-demand jobs and contribute to their communities.

“Sri Guru Nanak Sikh Centre Brampton is grateful to Premier Ford and Minister Piccini for their continued commitment to skills development through the Skills Development Fund. The Sikheya Institute, a project run by our Gurdwara, is dedicated to supporting newcomers with skills training in our community. This crucial funding enables us to enhance our training programs, ensuring a smoother transition for newcomers and connecting them with resources essential to their professional success.”

  • Dynacare Gamma Laboratory Partnership: This initiative was awarded $200,500 to train students to become medical laboratory technologists. This project is designed to support the health care industry and bolster health system capacity, addressing a crucial need in the sector.

Impact on Brampton and Beyond

Brampton, recognized as Canada’s fastest-growing major city, benefits immensely from these strategic investments.

Mayor Patrick Brown highlighted Brampton’s significant role in Canada’s growth, noting that the city is home to one of the country’s youngest and most diverse workforces. He emphasized that the province’s Skills Development Fund, which supports training initiatives, benefits not only Brampton but the entire province of Ontario. He also congratulated the Sri Guru Nanak Sikh Centre and Dynacare Gamma Laboratory Partnership on their grant award and expressed appreciation to the provincial government and Minister Piccini for their ongoing support in fostering Brampton’s prosperity.

Skills Development Fund: Round 5 Applications Open
