The shift into a climate-friendly, net zero emissions environment presents Canada with the powerful potential not only to become a global leader in cleantech innovation, paving the way to greater good, but also in encouraging Canadian companies to strengthen the economy by developing greener solutions and creating thousands of new jobs across the country.
Administered through Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), the Government of Canada has announced $55 million in government funding support to 20 leading cleantech companies to work on revolutionary projects that will help meet Canada’s net zero climate change goals.
The Sustainable Development Technology Canada funding will aid in the research and development of various cleantech projects in Canada that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lessen the environmental impacts of sectors such as mining, and support more sustainable agriculture practices. The federal government has been heavily investing in cleantech solutions through SDTC over the last few years, as the market is estimated to grow to a substantial $2.5 trillion by 2022.
“Uncertainty comes with the territory on Canada’s path to net zero—but that’s no reason to delay. There are many solutions we know will be central to reducing emissions in the next decade—electric vehicles, more efficient buildings, and non-emitting electricity like wind and solar are all safe bets. Canada has every advantage, and little risk, in rapidly scaling up these solutions.”
