It may surprise you that Ontario is a massive global competitor for film & television productions. The province has recorded 391 ongoing projects, resulting in $2.88 billion in productions across both foreign and domestic films. Total domestic projects come in at around $965.4 million, with total foreign films coming in at almost double at $1.91 billion over the course of 2021.
“Our government is making targeted investments in growing and emerging sectors, such as the North’s film and television industry. Investments like these are helping to solidify the North’s reputation as a top production centre in Canada and will enable businesses to expand, innovate and diversify.”
– Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry.
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) program is providing $2 million to four domestic film projects, each relating to the holiday season. Ontario is a natural fit for holiday films during its winter seasons, such that the province has become a hallmark for these kinds of film and television shoots.

Why These Projects Won Funding
The film and television industry has seen large changes over the course of the pandemic, and these changes can be seen in our media. There has been a large increase in animated film projects conducted in Ontario because of the work-from-home orders.
“Our government is proud to support the film and television industry in the area, which continues to create good jobs and develop skilled local talent. As we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, helping local production and post-production projects succeed is more important than ever.”
– Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing
The Ontario film and television industry is recovering from the ongoing pandemic, with their total number of film and television productions dropping from 343 in 2019 to 232 in 2020. The province is helping to attract more projects with provincial funding programs like NOHFC or Ontario Creates.
