SD Tech Fund: $6M for Energy Efficient Membrane Separation Technology

Imtex Membranes, based in Mississauga, ON, is a cleantech company that serves the petrochemical industry by specializing in the separation of gases using advanced membrane separation technology. This technology is expected to deliver significant energy and emissions reductions in petrochemical operations, particularly vehicle tire production. Imtex Membranes has received cleantech funding to continue the development of their membrane separation technology at their facility in Sarnia, ON.

Imtex Membranes has been awarded $6,000,000 in funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada’s (SDTC) SD Tech Fund.

The SD Tech Fund provides government funding to innovative businesses in Canada who are developing and commercializing clean technologies. The program supports large-scale technology development and/or early-stage commercialization projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve energy efficiency. Funding from the SD Tech Fund supports innovative clean technology leaders like Imtex Membranes, whose projects help tackle climate change and advance the economic potential of clean tech throughout regions in southern Ontario.

SD Tech Fund Awards $6M in Funding for Energy Efficient Solutions

Imtex Membranes has developed and patented Permylene Membrane Technology, which speeds up the separation process of olefin and paraffin. This process is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective technology that produces limited waste and uses less energy than traditional methods used by oil refiners and petrochemical producers, particularly in the production of vehicle tires. This technology has the potential to lower the operating costs of Imtex’s customers by up to 50%.

This membrane separation technology from Imtex Membranes will continue to advance through a $6M contribution from the SD Tech Fund.

If Permylene Membrane Technology were to be adopted worldwide, it could have the emissions savings power equivalent to taking 10 million cars off the roads. As an Ontario-based cleantech company, Imtex is increasing the cost competitiveness of the Canadian petrochemical industry by enhancing product value, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and improving energy efficiency.

SD Tech Fund: Funding for Clean Technology Innovation

Administered by Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), the SD Tech Fund is a Canadian government program funding research and development that helps fill the apparent gap between applied research and product commercialization. The fund assists businesses finance and carry out technology development and demonstration of innovative clean technologies.

SDTC highlights four exclusive project focus areas where eligible cleantech innovations can be applied. These include: climate change, clean air, clean soil, and clean water.

Applicants can receive up to 33% of eligible project expenses with a total funding contribution ranging from $200,000 to $15,000,000 in cleantech grants.

The SD Tech Fund is currently active and accepting applications.
