Economic Action Plan 2013 Funding for Small Business Contribution
As part of the Economic Action Plan for 2013, the Federal government has announced additional funding support to the Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC). SDTC will receive $325 million over eight years to support the development and demonstration of new, clean technologies. SDTC is the government’s primary organization for assisting SMEs with funding and development opportunities related to clean technology. Funding for SMEs includes assistance in commercialization of new products and services in clean tech.

- Plug Power Canada: Plug Power Canada’s GenDrive™ system is designed for class-3 forklifts and is the first commercially prosperous hydrogen fuel cell vehicle solution
- Quantiam Technologies Inc.: Alberta’s Quantiam Technologies created a coating for petrochemical furnaces that reduces energy consumption by 5 to 25 percent and slashes GHGs
- Westport Innovation: Westport Innovations’ HD system replaces traditional the diesel that is traditionally used by transport trucks with a distinctive, Canadian made clean-tech alternative.
The SD Tech Fund assisted these projects in bridging the financial gap between development and successful commercialization. This government funding for business will assist project which have potential to meet market demands while also having a positive impact on Canada’s environmental goals. Essentially, the small business grants strive to de-risk the commercialization process of clean technologies for Canadian companies and prepare fund recipients for downstream financing.
