Protein Industries Canada (PIC): $4M for Botaneco Inc.

Botaneco Inc., based out of Calgary, Alberta, is the world leader in the commercial production of oilseed oleosomes. They are an innovative, solutions-focused natural ingredient manufacturer with novel plant-based separation and purification technology used in the global food, feed, and personal care industries.

The company was recently announced as the lead applicant for the first project awarded funding under the Protein Industries Canada (PIC) supercluster funding for plant innovation program.

A total of $4,000,000 was awarded to Botaneco, led in partnership with Rowland Farms and Corteva Agrisciences, which was recently spun from DowDuPont to become a standalone company. The project will commercialize a new processing technology that will yield new oil and protein products. Utilizing crops like canola and hemp, this project will introduce new high-protein ingredients into the global food, feed, and aquaculture markets.

About the Protein Industries Canada (PIC) Program

Protein Industries Canada is an industry-led, not-for-profit, value-chain consortium mandated to position Canada as a leading global source of sustainable, high-quality plant protein and plant-based co-products. The organization will build on Canada’s strengths to increase our global market share in novel protein (and co-product) fractions, ingredients, food and feed products, and technologies, contributing to Canada’s economic growth and international trade balance. Over the next four years, Protein Industries Canada will invest up to $153M, made available through the Government of Canada’s Innovation Supercluster Initiative.

Canada’s Innovation Supercluster Initiative (ISI)

Canada’s Innovation Supercluster Initiative is more than just investing money; it’s about encouraging the private sector to do business differently through developing collaborations that leverage an array of strengths to drive innovation, overcome barriers, and explore new opportunities. By creating more value-added processing opportunities through collaboration in Canada, Protein Industries Canada’s goal is to generate new companies, products, processes, services, and jobs.

Apply for Protein Industries Canada’s Collaborative Program

Protein Industries Canada’s collaborative projects may receive up to 50% of eligible project costs. There is no set maximum that a project can receive.

The second call for plant innovation projects is currently open and has a deadline of September 13th, 2019.

PIC will fund a wide variety of project-specific costs including: wages, subcontractors, travel, equipment, facilities, user fees, materials, and supplies. The purchase of land/buildings and construction costs of new facilities are ineligible.
