By the end of October 2024, every convenience store, grocery store, and big-box retailer in Ontario will be able to sell beer, cider, wine, and ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages. This creates a massive opportunity for local producers, especially in a province known for its thriving apple industry. With approximately 979 apple growers and over 16,000 acres of apple trees, Ontario is Canada’s largest apple-growing region—making it the perfect backdrop for the growing craft cider movement.
In a significant effort to support this booming sector, the Ontario government has announced a $6 million investment through the Ontario Craft Cider Marketing Fund. Over the next six years, this fund aims to strengthen local cideries by expanding their marketing efforts and unlocking new market opportunities. This move is expected to boost Ontario’s reputation as a leader in craft cider production.
“Our government is supporting Ontario cideries in reaching more local consumers with their incredible, world-renowned products,”
Rob Flack, Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness
The Craft Cider Landscape in Ontario
With over 60 craft cideries operating across the province, Ontario’s cider industry is thriving. This new investment will help these businesses reach new markets and raise consumer awareness about the quality and uniqueness of local craft ciders. Through the Ontario Craft Cider Marketing Fund, the government aims to:
- Stimulate long-term growth in Ontario’s craft cider sector;
- Enhance consumer awareness of Ontario craft cider products; and
- Accelerate the ability of cideries to seize new market opportunities.
Additionally, the Small Cidery Program offers grants of up to $220,000 to help cideries expand their operations. This includes funding for hiring staff and purchasing state-of-the-art equipment, enabling businesses to scale up and increase production.
Ontario Brewery Grants and Grow Ontario Strategy
These initiatives align with the government’s Grow Ontario Strategy, which focuses on increasing local food consumption and production while expanding Ontario’s food and beverage exports. The strategy aims to create jobs, drive economic growth, and attract new investments in communities across the province.
“Ontario’s cider is world-class, and I am so pleased to support this strategic initiative,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance.
Showcasing Ontario Apples
The Ontario Craft Cider Association (OCCA) is also receiving support with up to $89,200 allocated to expanding the DrinkON Apples Certification. This certification helps consumers identify products made from 100% Ontario apples, further boosting local apple production and cider sales.
“The Cider Marketing Fund is the single most impactful development for the Ontario Craft Cider industry in over a decade. This fund will help it develop into one of Ontario’s most significant beverage alcohol industries.”
Jenifer Dean, Chair of the Ontario Craft Cider Association.
