New ISC Challenges for Canadian AI, Cleantech, and Transportation 

As a division of the Government of Canada’s Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), the federal institution that leads innovative science development projects,  Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) provides funding support to Canadian businesses in all industries that are working on specific challenge-oriented projects to improve the country’s economic growth and innovation in a variety of topic areas. 

Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) is currently offering four open funding programs. 

1. Solar Panel Recycling Challenge 

Opening Date: July 23, 2024 
Closing Date: September 3, 2024 

As solar energy adoption accelerates, the challenge of managing end-of-life solar panels becomes increasingly important. The Solar Panel Recycling Challenge seeks innovative solutions for the efficient recycling of solar panels, ensuring valuable materials are reclaimed to reduce environmental impact. Small businesses with expertise in recycling technologies, material recovery, or sustainable waste management are encouraged to propose solutions that can transform the solar industry and support Canada’s commitment to a circular economy. 

Key Objectives: 

• Develop or enhance technologies for the recycling of solar panels. 
• Optimize material recovery rates, particularly for valuable components like silicon, silver, and copper. 
• Ensure processes are cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally sustainable. 

2. Zero Emissions Technologies for Industrial Process Heating 

Opening Date: July 18, 2024 
Closing Date: September 5, 2024 

Industrial processes, particularly those requiring heating, are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. The Zero Emissions Technologies for Industrial Process Heating Challenge invites small businesses to develop cutting-edge solutions that can replace fossil fuel-based heating systems with zero-emission alternatives. This challenge aligns with Canada’s broader goals of reducing industrial emissions and achieving net-zero by 2050. 

Key Objectives: 

• Innovate zero-emission heating technologies applicable to industrial processes. 
• Ensure compatibility with existing industrial systems. 
• Demonstrate significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs. 

3. Trailer of the Future Challenge 

Opening Date: August 8, 2024 
Closing Date: September 19, 2024 

The transportation sector is Canada’s second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, with medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs) contributing a significant portion. The Trailer of the Future Challenge aims to revolutionize the trailer manufacturing industry by incorporating next-generation aerodynamic technologies. These innovations are essential to improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, particularly in Canada’s cold climates, where aerodynamic drag is a notable challenge. 

Key Objectives: 

• Exceed the aerodynamic performance of conventional trailers using advanced technologies. 
• Ensure compatibility with Canadian and U.S. class 8 truck configurations. 
• Adapt designs for performance in cold climates, reducing fuel consumption and enhancing the range of both conventional and zero-emission trucks. 

4. Artificial Intelligence Behavior Monitoring Solution 

Opening Date: July 30, 2024 
Closing Date: September 10, 2024 

Modernizing law enforcement practices to ensure safety and accountability is a critical priority. The Artificial Intelligence Behaviour Monitoring Solution Challenge seeks innovations that can enhance the RCMP’s ability to monitor detainees in holding cells. The challenge is focused on developing AI-driven systems that detect and alert officers to destructive, self-harming, or medically distressing behaviors, ensuring timely interventions and reducing in-cell deaths. 

Key Objectives: 

• Develop AI-based solutions capable of detecting a range of concerning behaviors in detainees. 
• Ensure the technology is non-invasive, tamper-resistant, and complies with privacy regulations. 
• Enhance RCMP’s ability to safeguard individuals in custody while maintaining public trust.

The Green and Inclusive Community Building (GICB) Program is a key part of Canada’s strengthened climate plan. This program aims to support green and accessible retrofits, repairs, upgrades to existing community buildings, and the construction of new community buildings that serve high-needs, underserved populations across Canada. With up to $1.5 billion in federal funding allocated over five years, the GICB program is currently open for its second scheduled intake, welcoming applications until October 16, 2024.
