The Canadian government has announced a new intake for their Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program (FACTAP) which is designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Canada’s fishing and aquaculture industries. Canada’s fisheries and aquaculture industries are being aided with $30 million in FACTAP funds over a six-year period (from 2017 to 2023) to improve their environmental performance.
“Canada’s seafood sector generates over seven billion dollars each year and employs thousands of Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Through initiatives like the Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program, we’re supporting small- and medium-sized businesses in the sector to implement clean technologies. Together, we’re creating more jobs in our coastal and rural communities, and building a stronger, more sustainable Blue Economy in Canada.”
-The Honourable Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard
Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program (FACTAP) welcomes Canadian aquaculture and fishing industry companies to apply for funding to adopt clean technology and reduce their environmental impacts. These efficiencies may be achieved through projects, funded by FACTAP, that place a focus on adopting clean technologies in the fishery and aquaculture industries.
Funding Amount
FACTAP may provide up to 75% of eligible project costs, up to a maximum of $1 million per year, per project. Moreover, the additional 25% of the project’s expenses may be made up of a combination of non-Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) funding sources. However, this must include a minimum of 10% cash commitment by the applicant.
Eligible Applicants
As an applicant for the FACTAP program, businesses must be directly involved in, or engaged in supporting activities related to, the fish and seafood sectors, including but not limited to:
- Fisheries that operate in wild capture,

Businesses must also fall under one of the following categorizations:
- A commercial enterprise, including
- For-profit companies or
