$485,000 in IRAP Research Grants Awarded to Kraken for Marine Technology Development
Kraken Sonar Systems Inc. is an engineer and manufacturer of advanced sonar and acoustic velocity sensors for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles. The technologies developed and commercialized by Kraken Sonar are widely used among military and commercial applications.
On November 10, 2016, Kraken Sonar was announced as recipients of up to $485,000 in Canadian government grants from the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP). IRAP research grants will support the development of Autonomous Launch and Recovery systems; this will help Kraken Sonar to expand their revenue and business potential.
IRAP funding will be provided through the program’s IRAP Mid-Size Projects stream. Businesses with innovative research and development projects may be eligible to receive up to 65-80% of technical labour costs to a maximum research grant of $500,000.

IRAP Business Funding Grants Used Develop Innovative Robotic Systems
Newfoundland-based Kraken Sonar Systems Inc. is a global leader in the development of underwater vehicle technologies. Some of their top products, like the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar (InSAS), allow for high-quality seabed surveying via ultra-high resolution imagery technology.
$485,000 in IRAP research grants will allow Kraken to improve unmanned aquatic vehicles by developing an Autonomous Launch and Recovery system.
Kraken’s technology will enable unmanned vehicles and cargo to efficiently be brought safely on-board a host ship. This has long been considered a high-risk operation since current technologies take a long time and may damage ships.
IRAP Research Grants for Innovative Technology Development
The Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) provides research grants to support research and development projects performed by Canadian small and mid-size enterprises (SMEs). Mature, incorporated organizations may receive substantial research funding through the IRAP Mid-Size Projects program.
IRAP Mid-Size research grants can be used to reduce a project’s technical labour expenses. Eligible applicants may receive up to 65-80% of labour costs to a maximum of $500,000 for employees directly involved in completing research projects. By the end of the project, IRAP participants should have a commercially-viable product ready for release.
Please Note: IRAP Mid-Size Projects should generate substantial revenue growth for the applicant business.
Perform Innovative Research and Development with Canadian Government Grants
Canadian businesses currently conceptualizing their research project should apply for IRAP grants before commencing their project activities or expenses. IRAP funding will only support future projects, and program approval is required before applicants can begin incurring eligible project expenses.
