Small Business owner with "open" signThis Canadian government funding program supports small businesses and start-ups through the 61 Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) across Ontario. FedDev Ontario serves Southern and Eastern Ontario through 37 regional CFDC offices, and FedNor serves Northern Ontario through 24 regional CFDC offices. The program offers a range of business funding to support small businesses develop and grow. The CFDCs aim to help develop rural and regional economies through strengthening partnerships with business and job creation.

The CFDCs offer a wide array of funding programs and services to support community economic development and small business growth. Funding from the CFDCs focuses on:

  • Support for community-based projects
  • Strategic community planning
  • Socio-economic development
  • Planning services and business information
  • Access to capital for Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and social enterprises

The CFDCs are not-for-profit organizations staffed by professionals with a range of areas of expertise. In addition to the funding and small business financing programs available through the CFDCs, start-ups and small businesses can obtain advice, strategic planning, and networking assistance to help their business grow. The strategic consultation services provided by CFDCs can help start-ups get a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities they might face in the local market-place.

Community Futures Development Corporation: Available Funding

Small businesses and start-ups can receive up to $150,000 in financial support through the CFDC programs. The funding available to small businesses in Ontario average between $40,000 and $150,000 depending on what the business is applying for and the potential impacts for the regional economy. This Ontario government funding is normally provided at as a loan with an interest rate of 2-3% above prime.

In addition to the small business funding program, companies can apply for the Southern Ontario Fund for Investment in Innovation (SOFII) administered by the CFDCs.
