Goldcorp is a senior gold producer focused on responsible mining practices with safe, low-cost production from a high-quality portfolio of mines. The company has developed a five-year growth strategy with the objective that by 2021, production will increase by 20%, reserves will grow by 20%, and all-in sustaining costs will reduce by 20%. Stemming from this growth plan is the Borden Project, located in Chapleau, Ontario.
The Clean Growth Program has invested $5,000,000 in energy reduction grants to support Goldcorp’s Borden Project and its efforts to make the Canadian mining industry more innovative and sustainable.
Administered by Natural Resources Canada, the Clean Growth Program supports the development and commercialization of clean technologies in the country’s energy, mining, and forestry sectors. Through the program, it’s participants are expected to bring forward new technologies which diminish the environmental impacts of Canada’s natural resources industries.
Clean Growth Program Awards $5M in Cleantech Funding
Goldcorp Inc. is a gold production company headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. With locations worldwide, the company employs about 15,800 people who are engaged in gold mining and related activities including extraction, processing, exploration, and reclamation.
Goldcorp is the recipient of $5M in cleantech grants for their efforts to support greenhouse gas reduction.
The company’s Borden Project in Chapleau, Ontario will be the first underground mine in Canada to replace all diesel underground mining equipment with battery electric vehicles. Canadian government funding from the Clean Growth Program is supporting the project as incorporating BEVs will significantly reduce the mine’s environmental footprint and improve sustainability, viability, and profitability.
Goldcorp is continuing to partner with technology suppliers like Sandvik, Maclean Engineering, federal and provincial governments, and First Nations to commercialize clean technologies and carry out the vision of a greener, safer mining industry. The Borden Project is expected to begin commercial production in the second half of 2019.
About the Clean Growth Program: Energy Reduction Grants
The Clean Growth Program is a Canadian government funding program providing grants for innovative clean technology research, development, and demonstration projects for Canada’s mining, energy, and forestry sectors.
The Clean Growth Program provides up to 50-75% of eligible project costs to a maximum $5 million to $10 million in cleantech funding.
Examples of eligible projects include:
- Battery-powered or alternative-fuel vehicles;
- Efficient mineral development processes;
- High-efficient and sustainable effluent treatment;
- Conversion of waste streams to produce fuel; and
- Reducing energy intensity of industrial equipment.
The Clean Growth Program is currently announcing semi-finalists from the 2018 submissions and has yet to confirm if another round of applications will be accepted.
