CIPEC: Receive Grants to Support ISO 50001 Certification Costs

Improving energy performance is an objective of many Canadian manufacturers in 2017. Not only are energy-efficient facilities more environmentally sustainable, but they also provide a significant reduction in overall energy costs. To become more energy efficient, industrial energy users are developing and implementing energy conservation programs. Fortunately, these types of projects can receive cost-sharing assistance from the Government of Canada.

The Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) is a manufacturing grant that supports energy management and ISO 50001 implementation projects. Companies may apply for funding to support specific projects that reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Verifiable reductions in energy use must be achieved to access funding.

Successful applicants may receive up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum $40,000 in Canadian manufacturing grants. This can also be stacked with provincial funding programs.

Applying to the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) is a two-stage process, this includes a project proposal and full application. Forms can be submitted for review year-round. Funding is provided after successful energy management projects are over and results have been reported.

The Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC)

CIPEC is an industrial energy efficiency grant that offsets a portion of energy management and ISO 50001 implementation project costs. Canadian manufacturers and other industrial-based businesses reducing energy demand are the focus of this program, which is funded and administered by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

Industrial energy users may receive up to 50% of project costs to a maximum $40,000 in Canadian business grants. Projects requiring additional assistance can stack CIPEC with provincial funding programs.

CIPEC Energy Management Projects

The Energy Management Projects stream can reduce the cost of conducting projects that improve energy performance.

• Project Types: Development and distribution of information related to energy efficiency; development and delivery of training; assessments, evaluations and benchmarking studies; and development of technical guides and reports, implementation plans and best practices studies.
• Project Eligibility: Must meet program objectives; demonstrate potential for learning and/or repeatability; have results that can be disseminated; and have potential to recommend energy-saving technical projects.

CIPEC ISO 50001 Implementation Pilot Projects

CIPEC also supports implementation of ISO 50001 in industrial facilities.

• Project Types: Establishing systems and processes necessary for a systematic approach to achieve continuous energy performance improvement. Project concludes with a verifiable ISO 50001 certification.
• Project Eligibility: Must have senior management support and commitment; participation of employees/consultants with experience in energy management standards (ISO, ANSI or others); and commitment to monitor and report on results over a specified period.

Canadian Manufacturers Eligible for CIPEC Grants

The Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) is available to firms occupying industrial facilities that are registered as a CIPEC Leader with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). This is a free process, however, it must be completed prior to the start of a funding-eligible project.

How to Apply for the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation

To apply for CIPEC industrial energy conservation funding, applicants must first submit a project proposal outlining how energy efficiency improvements will be achieved. Proposals are sent to Natural Resources Canada, who will then contact successful applicants to sign a Contribution Agreement document.
