The Ontario’s Angel Network Program (ANP) is an Ontario Government funded program that serves to create new Angel Groups in Ontario where none existed, and foster their success with initiatives and information to transfer best practices from successful Angels. ANP currently accounts for just one of the several Ontario Government Funding Programs for Start-Ups that are looking to attract investors and financing for their business development activities. The Network of Angel Organizations (NAO- Ontario), a member of the Ontario Network of Excellence, is the Administrator of Ontario’s Angel Network Program, on behalf of the Government of Ontario. Since 2007 its mission has been to create and grow non-profit Angel investor groups for all the regions of Ontario. Building the membership and best practices of these groups builds a more potent combination of mentorship and capital for innovative start-up companies in the province.
Supported by the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Network of Excellence (ONE) is Ontario’s innovation system. The ONE is made up of regional and sector focused organizations designed to help Ontario-based entrepreneurs rapidly grow their companies, and create jobs.
Acquiring Financing and Funding for Small Business
The Network of Angel Organizations (NAO) has so far partnered with 12 Angel investor groups across Ontario and works in collaboration with the Ontario Network of Excellence members, including Ontario’s Regional Innovation Centres (RICs) and MaRS, to locate fresh business concepts that require investment and mentorship opportunities. In order to receive investment from Angel investor groups, companies must be able to prove that they are investment-ready by speaking with a representative to ensure they are qualified for investment or other assistance. Those businesses deemed not-yet investment-ready can receive additional coaching and mentorship through the Business Acceleration Program.
Those businesses that currently find themselves in the latter stages of their business development may want to consider their potential to receive Canadian Government Grants for Small Business. Mentor Works offers a variety of services for Canadian SMEs, including one-on-one business coaching and strategic planning, to help navigate and identify their potential Canadian Government funding opportunities.
