Top 3 Job Boards to Attract Youth Talent to Your Workforce

Across Canada, talent and skill shortages remain a concern for many businesses and industries. Recent studies suggest that 82% of employers struggle to find properly trained and/or educated candidates to fill vacancies within their organization. Traditional recruitment methods are not enough; employers must leverage emerging technologies to effectively connect with youth talent, such as social and cognitive methods.

As technology evolves, businesses must consider new ways of attracting and recruiting youth talent. So, how do businesses find qualified candidates? One of the most effective ways to attract the right people is to promote job vacancies through resources, such as online job boards.

Job boards, such as Indeed and Workopolis, still play a significant role in company recruitment efforts, including mobile apps so that job seekers can search for current opportunities on-the-go from handheld devices. This article will explore the top three job boards to use when scaling up your workforce with academic interns and/or post-secondary graduates.

One of the greatest challenges faced by employers continues to be attracting youth talent. Knowing where and when to reach out to post-secondary students and recent graduates can make a big difference. To do so, businesses are encouraged to optimize their web presence to attract and effectively communicate with millennials. Recent studies indicate that 81% of millennials appreciate the ability to stay connected online, anywhere and at any time.

The following online job posting resources will help your business connect with high calibre candidates and attract additional applications:

LinkedIn: Social Media Recruitment

LinkedIn is one of the flagship professional networking platform, owned by Microsoft. This social media network offers access to a wide range of professionals, from students and graduates to corporate executives. The most recent data indicates that LinkedIn has over 467 million users and 87% of recruiters are using LinkedIn to uncover top talent.

LinkedIn can be used as a qualification tool and allows employers to check out a potential candidate’s profile, gain a sense of their work experience, and educational background, before making any kind of contact. Additionally, recruiters can upload a targeted job posting within the platform, interact with potential hires, and allow candidates to apply online. The program will even match and suggest potential candidates based on their profiles without them manually applying.

LinkedIn Jobs charges $395 pre-tax per posting; the platform then matches your job description’s requirements to LinkedIn profiles and sends relevant/applicable candidates a link to your job description via email or direct message. It’s a great way to maximize your exposure and gain access to a wide population of suitable candidates. To get started, you’ll need a LinkedIn account. Once you’re logged in, you can post jobs on the LinkedIn Jobs Page.

Indeed: World’s Largest Recruitment Service

Indeed is the leading job search engine and online recruitment resource worldwide. Businesses can upload job postings for free or choose to pay a small fee to promote their postings to attract qualified candidates. Employers are encouraged to make sure their job description is focused, engaging, and qualifying to minimize the number of unsuitable applicants. Additionally, Indeed allows job seekers to apply for positions directly from the website.

The popular resource also offers a mobile app, which generates 45% of the overall job searches that take place on Indeed. In 2016, it was reported that Indeed hit a record of 200 million unique visitors, which was a 40% increase from the previous year. Job seekers have access to over 16 million postings worldwide, with 8.2 new jobs posted per second.

To get started, employers must determine whether they would like to use the free service, or the pay-per-click model. On Indeed’s website and mobile application, employers can select ‘Post a Job’ and upload information regarding vacancies within their organization.

TalentEgg: Post-Secondary Interns & Graduates

TalentEgg.ca is Canada’s most popular youth hiring job board and online career resource for students and recent graduates. The online platform provides solutions that aid both students and grads on the job hunt, as well as employers who are looking to attract top talent to their team. In addition, job seekers can access career building resources, such as how to write a résumé and cover letter.

On average, TalentEgg.ca generates over 250,000 visitors per month and serves approximately 3 million employers and students/graduates. In addition to connecting students with current job opportunities, the organization also encourages entrepreneurship and offers professional development training courses.

  2. Great Post,

I do find student union job boards are a great resource for hiring youth talent. With aggregate job boards, you get too many, applicants, and university job boards are password-protected so you usually get only recent graduates.

    1. Hi Ross – It’s true that each job board has its own unique benefits. Posting to multiple job boards is an effective way to diversify your candidates and leverage each job board’s strengths. The employer also needs a methodology to filter through the job applicants quickly and fairly to accommodate for the additional applicant volume collected from all job boards.
