Canadian Agricultural Partnership Ontario Grants for Food Producers
The Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) is a federal-provincial-territorial suite of government funding programs for agricultural producers and processors. It is comprised of several grants and repayable funding programs specific to companies in the agriculture and agri-food industry. The dynamic framework of agri-food funding programs offers five years of support; most programs available through CAP will be in place until 2023.
One stream of CAP, the Canadian Agricultural Partnership: Ontario Producers program, offers Ontario government funding to businesses that grow or otherwise produce agricultural products. Food and agricultural commodity producers may use the funding to offset a portion of eligible costs for a wide range of projects, including equipment upgrades, safety and traceability improvements, business planning, and product/process research and development.
Through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, Ontario agricultural producers may receive up to 30% to 50% of eligible expenses to a maximum $2,500-$75,000 in grant funding per project.
To receive CAP Ontario government funding, businesses must be deemed an eligible agricultural producer and apply by one of the program’s upcoming deadlines. Applications are typically approved within 60 business days; upon approval, applicants may begin to incur funding-eligible expenses.
Canadian Agricultural Partnership: Ontario Producers Funding
The Canadian Agricultural Partnership: Ontario Producers stream offers agriculture funding opportunities to support businesses that grow, raise, or otherwise produce agricultural products. As administered by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), the CAP Ontario program offers cost-sharing assistance to help food producers reduce the costs and risks of agriculture projects. Agri-producers may offset the costs of projects that directly boost competitiveness and provide new growth opportunities.
Eligible applicants may access up to $2,500 to $75,000 in grant funding, covering 30% to 50% of project expenses. Exact amounts depend on the agriculture project’s focus.
This stream of CAP funding closely resembles support previously provided through the Growing Forward 2 Ontario Producers stream. Since its relaunch in April 2018, the program has been enhanced to provide increased support for farmers and other agricultural producers.
Business Eligibility: CAP Ontario Producer Grants
While each project type maintains its own unique applicant eligibility criteria, most streams of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership: Ontario Producers program requires applicants to:
- File business and/or farm income/loss taxes in Ontario;
- Have a valid Farm Business Registration Number (FBRN), unless exempted; and
- Have a valid and up-to-date Premises Identification Number (PIN).
Agriculture Projects Eligible for Canadian Agricultural Partnership: Ontario Producers
The Canadian Agricultural Partnership: Ontario Producers program provides funding based on the type of project proposed by applicants. The total amount of funding a farm business may receive depends on the types of projects completed, and the overall number of projects completed within the program’s five-year mandate.
CAP Ontario supports the application/completion of up to two projects at the same time. Submitting multiple applications can help optimize funding potential.
