Canadian Wine Industry: $2.3M in AgriAssurance Agriculture Funding
The government of Canada continues to support the Canadian wine industry to expand and allow the sector to reach international markets. Vineyards in Canada are an important part of the country’s economy and investing in long-term growth is crucial to ensure growers have access to all the necessary tools to produce high-quality products. The Canadian Grapevine Certification Network (CGCN) has recently received federal agricultural funding to help meet the growing demand for Canadian wine.
CGCN has been made the recipient of $2,300,000 in funding from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership’s AgriAssurance stream.
Established in 2018, the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) is the principal government funding mechanism used to manage grants for agri-food companies across Canada. The AgriAssurance stream is designated with helping businesses implement third-party assurance certification projects that help increase export opportunities and address international market requirements. This recent funding for CGCN will go towards ensuring high-quality, certified disease-free grapevines in Canada.
AgriAssurance: $2.3M for Canadian Grapevine Certification Network
The Canadian Grapevine Certification Network (CGCN) is a Canada-wide not-for-profit organization comprised of members from Canada’s four provincial grape growing associations: Grape Growers Association of Nova Scotia, Grape Growers of Ontario, British Columbia Wine Grape Council, and the Quebec Wine Council. CGCN’s mission is to ensure a sustainable supply of certified, disease-free grapevine material.
CGCN has received federal government funding from the AgriAssurance stream under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
The Network will use funding to establish a clean plant network of virus-free grapevines that Canadian grape growers can then plant in their own vineyards to ensure the long-term feasibility of the Canadian grape and wine sectors. In order to achieve this, CGCN will first categorize and evaluate current vine samples from grape growers and nurseries across Canada. A database will then be used to trace the vines produced from the clean vines and planted in a grower’s vineyard back to the mother plants, helping the CGCN keep Canada’s vineyards virus-free.
This project will ensure Canadian growers have access to clean vines and healthy vineyards to continue the growth and stability of the Canadian wine industry.
Canadian Agricultural Partnership: AgriAssurance Stream
The Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) is a federal-provincial-territorial government funding program that offers many streams of financial support for the agri-food industry. A stream under CAP, the AgriAssurance program provides support to Canadian agricultural and agri-food sector SMEs who are pursuing third-party certification for the first time in order to meet a specific export opportunity.
Businesses may receive up to 50% to a maximum $50,000 in non-repayable funding via AgriAssurance.
Applications will be accepted until September 2022, or until funding has been fully committed.
