Canadian Government Funding for Trade Shows in 2020
Accessing government funding for trade shows is essential to maximize your export marketing efforts. By applying for government grants, companies can reduce trade show costs such as travel, lodging, booth rental, and marketing material translation.
When used strategically, these funds can greatly improve the impact of your next international trade show.
CanExport: Canadian Government Grants for Exporting
One of the funding programs your business may be able to use is CanExport. CanExport is a Canadian government grant designed to support the export marketing and international expansion activities of up to 1,000 businesses per year.
- Amount: Up to 75% of eligible expenses or $75,000 in cost-matching funds per application. Two applications can be submitted per year to a maximum $99,999.
- Projects: Marketing activities in new export markets (having less than $20,000 in annual sales, or representing less than $100,000 or less than 10% of total sales, in the past year), including trade show participation, translation costs, marketing, market research, and related costs.
- Timeline: One project open at any one time. Can apply for funding year-round.
- Eligibility: 1+ years incorporated, 1-500 people on payroll, and $100k-$100M in annual, taxed revenues. The program is open to all industry sectors, including agriculture and agri-food.
Apply for Trade Show Funding in Advance of Trade Shows
When applying for government funding, businesses must keep in mind that it can take up to a month or longer to prepare a detailed application that fully and accurately demonstrates your business’ strategic exporting opportunity.
Furthermore, review of these applications can take several weeks to several months. After this time, a business may be formally approved for funding and can begin making project spends. To receive Canadian government funding for trade shows in 2020, it’s recommended that businesses begin the research and application process as soon as possible.

Hello,
We have stockpiled and shipped product to our US warehouse to launch our “invasion” of the US market, and have built a sales representative force for our products.l
We will be attending trade shows in the USA, but as a start-up company, we do not yet have $200,000 in sales.
Is there any program which can assist us?
Yours truly,
Richard Adler
Rapid Barrier Systems Inc.
Hello Richard,
Many export and trade show programs require applicants to be cashflow and revenue positive at the time of application. This is because the government wants to see there is proven market demand for your product prior to taking it global.
There are other opportunities that can support your expansion efforts though. I’ll ask a colleague of mine to reach out to you to see if there are some other ways for you to access government funding. Expect them to reach out in the next day or two!
Thanks !!!

thanks for sharing this blog
Hi Harvey, thanks for your comment! Trade shows definitely have the potential to amplify export market potential when done well. While going to shows is critical, it needs to be coupled with some killer marketing strategies to be successful.
Hi there!
We are a very new business having started earlier this year and have gained a great response from our industry leaders after having participated in US tradeshows like Curve Expo NY. We have credited proof from our industry leaders such as British Vogue and WGSN, that our business is viable with a place in the market right now. We’ve shipped product to our US customers acquired from the the Curve Expo New York show that we participated in August of this year to launch our first 3 collections to the North American and US market.
We will be attending these same trade shows in the United States for 2020 as to continue with the momentum already gained from having attended first shows this year in 2019. As a start-up company though, we don’t have minimum requirement for sales and are not quite cleared from 1 year in business yet.
Are there any options for funding to help us to continue our immediate growth and positive response from industry leaders in our market?
Many thanks!
Esther

Hello Esther,
Thank you so much for reaching out. As it turns out most of the programs we work with are designed for businesses who have been established for a couple of years. There are a couple of programs that we work with that do not have these same requirements. I think an excellent next step would be to fill out a contact form on our website here. We can then have someone reach out to you and go over the details of what we can do together. We look forward to hearing from you.
useful information Jeff
