To help build a more sustainable future and tackle the world crisis that is climate change, the Government of Canada has announced an investment of $41.8M from the SD Tech Fund towards innovative clean technology projects. This funding program helps to position Canada as a global leader in part with the government’s Innovation and Skills Plan, a strategic plan in place to accelerate the research and development of healthier communities, clean air, clean soil, and clean water, with the further objective to create more middle-class jobs.

Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) is granting $41,800,000 to 10 Canadian companies for cleantech projects with goals to reduce environmental impacts and create new jobs across the country.

Sustainable Development Technology Canada is an independent federal foundation formed by the Government of Canada to support Canadian companies in developing clean technologies that will address environmental challenges in Canada and help strengthen economic growth. The $41.8M from the government funding program will provide 10 small and medium-sized Canadian businesses (SMEs) with the opportunity to research and develop new clean technology projects focused on innovation and sustainability.

SD Tech Fund Invests in Cleantech Sustainability Projects

Companies from Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia have received SD Tech Fund grants for cleantech innovation. These projects will create good middle-class jobs across the county and help strengthen Canada’s plan to combat climate change.

“Investments in clean technology support the work of Canadian innovators to reduce Canada’s environmental footprint and grow economic opportunities.”
– The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry

The 10 companies and their cleantech projects are organized by their respective provinces below:

Ontario

Pantonium ($2,000,000): Pantonium is developing low cost, on-demand transit to replace over six million car trips, eliminating around 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

EcoPackers ($2,750,000): EcoPackers’ plant-based and compostable eco-resins will help manufacturers develop eco-friendly and non-toxic single-use plastics.

Aspire Food Group ($10,000,000): Aspire is developing the first automated cricket farm to produce cost-effective edible insect protein as a sustainable substitute to animal protein.

Quebec

Effenco ($4,250,000): Effenco has developed a commercial truck connectivity platform—the world’s most flexible and efficient heavy vehicle hybrid solution—that supports up to 10% fuel savings and reduces vehicle maintenance costs and GHG emissions.

Sollum Technologies Inc. ($5,000,000): Sollum Technologies has developed the only smart lighting solution that actively recreates and regulates the full range of the sun’s natural light. Sollum’s LED platform enables greenhouse producers to create customized light recipes that can simulate plants’ native growth climate.

Anomera ($5,000,000): Anomera has developed carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from harvested Canadian forests using a patented eco-friendly method that assist in making commercial and industrial products more environmentally sustainable.

British Columbia

CryoLogistics ($2,100,000): CryoLogistics has developed a protected container that uses liquid carbon dioxide as a natural coolant for methods of shipping high-value temperature-delicate food and biopharma products across the global supply chain.

Click Materials ($4,600,000): Click Materials is developing an energy-efficient electrochromic solution to modern windows for residential, commercial, and automotive purposes.

Alberta

Quebe Technologies Inc. ($3,000,000): Quebe has developed an industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) device that uses artificial intelligence to cost-efficiently reduce greenhouse gases by detecting gas emissions at gas and oil facilities.

Nova Scotia

Salient Energy ($3,000,000): Salient Energy has designed a new form of battery to inspire the world’s ongoing shift to eco-friendly energy. The zinc-ion battery is cost-effective, safer, and more efficient than the widespread lithium-ion batteries that currently control the market.
