Funding and Eligibility 

Funding Amount 

Eligible Ontario SMEs can receive up to $100,000 to pilot their technologies in OVIN Technology Pilot Zones. This funding is provided over a maximum period of 24 months and requires a 1:1 industry contribution, ensuring that companies are equally invested in the success of their projects. 

Eligibility Criteria 

To qualify for this program, businesses must meet the following criteria: 

• Location: Based in Ontario. 
• Sector Focus: Primarily in the automotive and mobility sectors. 
• Technology Readiness Levels: Technologies must be at TRL 7-9, indicating they are at an advanced stage of development and ready for real-world testing. 
• Commercialization Plan: Applicants must demonstrate a clear path to market for their innovations, showing how they plan to integrate their solutions into the broader supply chain. 

Applicant Eligibility 

• Size: The program is specifically designed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ontario that are driving innovation within the automotive and mobility sectors; 

• Capabilities: Businesses should have the technical and operational capacity to pilot their technologies effectively within the designated zones; and 

• Alignment with Program Goals: Innovations must align with the broader goals of enhancing mobility solutions and contributing to a zero-emissions future. 

Deadlines 

While the program operates on a rolling basis, it’s crucial to apply early to secure their spot in the pilot zones. Projects must be completed within the 24-month funding period, so businesses should ensure they have a well-defined timeline for testing and development. 

Program Overview 

Urban Mobility Zone  

Located in Toronto, this Technology Pilot Zone addresses the unique challenges of urban mobility in Canada’s largest metropolitan areas. As cities grow and evolve, so do the demands on their infrastructure and transportation systems. The Urban Mobility Zone offers Ontario SMEs the chance to integrate advanced technologies, such as connected, autonomous, and electric vehicle systems, with urban infrastructure. Here, companies can pilot solutions that reduce road congestion, improve accessibility, and make urban transportation more efficient and sustainable. 

Examples of technologies that can be piloted in this zone include: 

• Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) for passenger or delivery purposes. 
• Electric Vehicle Charging solutions to support the growing demand for EVs. 
• Accessibility Solutions for people with disabilities, enhancing inclusivity in urban transportation. 
• Innovative Infrastructure Technologies like dynamic signage, advanced traffic signals, and novel pavement materials. 

Cross-Border Mobility Zone 

In the Windsor-Sarnia area, the Cross-Border Mobility Zone is focused on enhancing the movement of people and goods across borders, a critical component of both the regional and national economy. Leveraging Ontario’s partnership with the State of Michigan, this zone provides a unique environment for SMEs to pilot multi-modal transportation solutions that streamline cross-border activities. 

Technologies that could be tested in this zone include: 

• Commercial Drones for cargo transport and delivery. 
• Automated Vehicle and Cargo Authentication systems to enhance security and efficiency. 
• Dangerous Goods Tracking technologies to ensure safety in transport. 
• Real-Time Travel Condition Information systems to improve cross-border travel efficiency.
