CleanBC Funds Companies Transitioning to Cleaner Energy
Climate change has become the center of the government’s attention as it continues to be an issue of increasing concern as carbon emissions continue to increase and new heat records are set around the world. Communities across Canada are paying a lot of attention to these challenges which have generated a lot of interest in cleaner energy solutions.
Canada has a large manufacturing and production sector, which is a major producer of greenhouse gases in the country. Therefore, many facilities in Canada are facing the challenge of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions via fossil fuel use by electrifying their systems.
To address these challenges, the organization CleanBC has introduced funding streams that will assist businesses as they transition to cleaner energy alternatives.
CleanBC Customs Program – Energy Study Incentive Stream
Among the primary objectives of CleanBC Custom Incentives – Energy Study Incentive Stream is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through fuel switching and other electrification measures (such as heat reclamation systems) that result in a reduction in fossil fuel consumption.
Funding Amount
It is possible to access up to 50% of the cost of an energy study up to a maximum of $20,000.
Eligibility Criteria
The account is assigned to a BC Hydro Key Account Manager (KAM) who is responsible for managing the account. During pre-screening, the project must demonstrate that it has the potential to be implemented at a single facility in such a way that it can reduce lifetime energy consumption by at least 1,200 tC02e over the course of its life cycle. For a building to be eligible for this program, the building must be in the BC Hydro service territory, which includes New Westminster.
There are several criteria that must be met or a project to qualify as an energy measure:
- Provide assistance in reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a net basis;
- Achieve measurable and verifiable energy impacts; and
- Result in energy impacts that can be estimated using standard engineering calculations.

Eligible Projects
Projects may be eligible for this program if they meet the following criteria:
- Feasible to implement measures at a single facility that will result in lifetime savings of at least 1,200 tC02e over the course of the project;
- Involve a technology that is not covered by other utility DSM programs; and
- Technology used must be able to provide net electrical load growth as a result.

Project Deadlines
Applicants have 6 months from the date of the signed Energy Study Agreement to complete the energy study.
CleanBC Custom Incentives – Capital Incentive Stream
Among the key objectives of CleanBC Custom Incentives – Capital Incentive Stream is the reduction of GHG emissions from fuel switching and other electrification measures (such as heat recovery systems) that will result in significant reductions in the use of fossil fuels in the future, reducing GHG emissions.
Amount of Funding
For successful applicants, the following funding allocations may be available to them:
- Save $40 per tC02e of lifetime GHG emissions up to a maximum of $200,000 per customer;
- Northern customers save $50/tC02e up to a maximum of $250,000 in savings on lifetime GHG emissions; and
- Cap on incentives at the lesser of 50% of the incremental cost of a project or to the point where there is less than 4 years of payback for the measure after the incentive is given.
Eligible Applicants
The account is assigned to a BC Hydro Key Account Manager (KAM) to manage.
There are several criteria that must be metfor a project to qualify as an energy measure:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a net basis;
- By doing so, it is possible to achieve measurable and verifiable energy impacts; and
- As a result of the project, there will be a corresponding impact on energy consumption which can be estimated based on standard engineering calculations.

Eligible Activities
This CleanBC stream offers customized incentives to support the implementation of energy conservation measures, as identified in the energy study, to help reduce energy consumption.
Program Deadline
There is an 18-month time limit after the Capital Incentive Agreement has been signed for the applicant to implement the project.
